In a chilling and emotional interview Tuesday, a California man confessed to a murder he committed in 1993 before surrendering to the police.

Brian Hawkins, 44, and two other people were arrested this week in connection with McAlister's 1993 death, Redding police said, after Hawkins walked into the headquarters of CNN affiliate KRCR and said that he was involved. Hawkins said, "I talked to them several times and told them I was going to make it there so I could tell them what happened and I wanted their forgiveness". Hawkins reached out to KRCR 7 ABC news to confess to his crime on camera before turning himself into the police station next door.

Hawkins, who was subsequently arrested by police on burglary and robbery charges, named 46-year-old Shanna Culver and her brother 45-year-old Curtis Culver as accomplices, according to the news station.

"I just hope the community can also forgive me". Instead, he was robbed and stabbed to death-his body left to rot and his vehicle dumped at the nearest Costco.

McAlister's remains weren't found for a year but his death was ruled a homicide. Investigators believe the Culvers and Hawkins lured him to Shingletown under the guise of selling him methamphetamine.

All three individuals now reside in the Shasta County jail-on charges of murder, robbery and burglary.

Police released images of McAlister on social media, writing: "We wish to thank Frank's family for their patience during our investigation into Frank's murder, which has spanned more than two decades".

Investigators said that after they were taken into custody, one of the Culvers confessed to their part in the crime, though it was not revealed which one came forward. "I know the wrong can't be changed but this is the closest I can come to doing the right thing ..."

"I've been through hell my whole life because of this", he said through tears. Later that day, the auto was found outside a Costco in Redding, with blood on the car's exterior and interior, police said.

He said he reached out to McAlister's family a year ago to ask for forgiveness and vowed to confess to the crime. "It's kinda weird that Frank never even got to have a life and neither did I", he said in the interview, spotted by Uproxx on Thursday. "By the time I got there, his father had passed away", Hawkins said.

After the interview, Hawkins went to the Shasta County Sheriff's office to meet with police investigators, the Redding Police Department said.
