On Thursday, in its first pre-induction trial conducted by the SFC, the 17-metre Agni-V was launched from a canister atop the road-mobile launcher from the Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast at 9.53am.

The long range surface-to-surface Agni-5 - an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of traveling more than 3,000 miles - was "successfully flight tested for its full range", the Indian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

"Agni-5" is most advanced missile in the Agni series with new technologies incorporated in it in terms of navigation and guidance, warhead and engine.

Describing the trial as "fully successful", the sources said, the sophisticated missile travelled for 19 minutes and covered 4,900 km.

India has at present in its armoury of Agni series, Agni-1 with 700 km range, Agni-2 with 2000 km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2500 km to more than 3500km range.

The missile, developed by India's very own Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has a range of 5000-5500 km and brings entire Asia and nearly 70 percent Europe within its striking range.

The missile's canister-launch version provides more flexibility, allowing the missile to quickly be transported and fired from most platforms.

Created to carry a 1.5-tonne nuclear warhead, Agni-V has been tested four times in "developmental or experimental trials" earlier.

The flight performance of the missile was tracked and monitored by radars, range stations and tracking systems all through the mission. All mission objectives were successfully met.
