Google Assistant shouts down Alexa at CES

On Tuesday, the search giant had a few announcements to make which included its plans to expand Assistant this year and a new product called Google Pay.

All of this is due to a shift in Google's thinking. All the major consumer electronics companies talked up their efforts to add AI to their devices so they are more predictive and helpful for their owners. However, now they've taken it a step further.

Amazon said Alexa on Toyota vehicles is a realization of the company's long-term vision for the intelligent voice assistant. Getting shut out of voice devices could imperil Google's lucrative digital-advertising business, the source of its financial strength. As evidenced by the white jumpsuit-clad Google-ites at dozens of booths, it's also about third-party integrations. It's similar in some respects to the decade-old battle between the iPhone and Google's Android system in smartphones, or to the much older fight between Apple's Mac computers and Microsoft's Windows PCs.

Industry watchers are struggling to keep up with all the different devices that Amazon has partnered with on Alexa, but it's clear the company has been busy making friends with manufacturers over the past year.
