The Menlo Park, California, company said in a news release that it identifies local publishers as those clicked on by readers in tight geographic areas. "If you follow a local publisher or if someone shares a local story, it may show up higher in News Feed".

"People consistently tell us they want to see more local news on Facebook", The Verge quoted Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, as saying.

"There's a lot of research that suggests that people who read local news are more engaged in their community and they're more likely to engage in civic improvements", Zuckerberg told the newspaper.

Reading more local news, he noted, can also motivate people to get more involved in their communities.

If a user follows a local news outlet or a friend posts a local story, it may show up higher on the News Feed, he said.

Facebook said it will start ranking local news higher on the News Feed in the United States, but plans to roll out the changes to other countries this year. For more, see their Publisher Guidelines. We are testing this in six U.S. cities and plan to expand in the coming months. This update may not capture all small or niche-interest publishers at first, but we are working to improve precision and coverage over time.

We've worked closely with local publishers through the Facebook Journalism Project over the previous year, visiting newsrooms around the world to provide training and support for journalists, as well as building products that work for their publications and readers. But the company, which also competes with news outlets for ad dollars, has also faced criticism that it isn't doing enough to combat misinformation from going viral.

On January 11, Facebook announced that its switch to meaningful social interactions with friends and families will take a hit on the amount of news in News Feed.

The social network also worked with local news publishers through the Facebook Journalism Project in the past year. It connects people to news and info in their community and will expand all over the country in the next months.
