During questioning led by Democratic members of the committee, Simpson spouted out various names of Russian businessmen who he said have been linked to Trump over the years.
Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson told the House Intelligence Committee in closed-door testimony that he "saw patterns of buying and selling" by President Trump "that we thought were suggestive of money laundering", and indicated Russians infiltrated conservative groups like the National Rifle Association as part of their campaign influence operation. The transcript was posted online Thursday after a bipartisan committee vote to release it.
Which raises the question: When Simpson was asked, back in November, how he came to meet Bruce Ohr, why didn't he mention the most obvious reason: that Ohr's wife had been working for Simpson?
Earlier this month, Democratic US Senator Dianne Feinstein released Simpson's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she is the ranking Democrat.
His interview with the House Intelligence Committee covers much of the same ground. Fusion GPS was later hired by law firm Perkins Cole, which had been retained by the DNC. Fusion GPS is a research firm that put together a dossier that alleged President campaign had ties to Russian officials.
The Trump Organization dismissed the allegations as unsubstantiated.
As a result, Simpson said, "we began talking to the press again about - we decided that if James Comey wasn't going to tell people about this [Russia] investigation, that, you know, he had violated the rules, and we would only be fair if the world knew that both candidates were under FBI investigation".
"The other one that...was concerning to us was the golf courses in Scotland and Ireland".
Simpson said he had become alarmed about real estate deals involving Trump properties and wealthy Russians, and whether those interactions amounted to money laundering.
Recently released testimony shows Fusion GPS founder was trying to steer the FBI away from further investigation of the Clintons while he was encouraging investigators to look into Trump.
"Well, so what is well known and well established in criminology now is that the Russian mafia is essentially under the dominion of the Russian Government and Russian Intelligence Services", Simpson said.
Sources close to the committee were quoted as saying that the move was an effort by committee Republicans to thwart the panel's leading Democrat, California Rep. Adam Schiff, from making it seem as if they were trying to keep the testimony a secret.
Another Democrat on the Republican-controlled committee, Representative Jim Hines, sought to temper Schiff's comment, telling CNN that Simpson "did not provide evidence and I think that's an important point".
He and his company hired the former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, whose memos about Donald Trump's relationship form the dossier that has become so much a part of the sprawling Russian Federation matter.
The proposal that was on the Senate floor would be for funding for four weeks, but Democrats have been refusing to support it. As of Friday afternoon, it appeared the Senate wouldn't have the 60 votes needed to concur with the House.
The senator condemned Republican leaders in Congress, who he said left Democrats out of discussions on the spending legislation. House Speaker Paul Ryan immediately summoned reporters to try to pin the blame on top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer of NY .
