Scientists believe that there are good biological reasons why breastfeeding may protect against diabetes.

For women who breastfed for six months or less, there was a 25 per cent reduction in diabetes risk.

Previous research has shown that breastfeeding has other long-term benefits for mothers, including a lower a risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

"Breastfeeding makes you more sensitive to the hormone insulin", Kumar said. During that study, researchers also gathered information on pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Breastfeeding for six months or longer appears to significantly cut the chances of a woman developing Type 2 diabetes, a 30-year national USA study suggests.

That produced information on more than 1,200 women for the new study.

Overall, 418 mothers, or 34 percent, nursed infants for up to six months.

"Researchers in the USA examined data from 1238 women who enrolled in a heart health study called Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) more than 30 years ago, and whose health and lifestyle choices were monitored throughout that time". For instance, when women breastfeed they have lower blood sugar levels, even though sugar production goes up to keep pace with the baby's needs.

A diabetes diagnosis after pregnancy was much more common among women who developed a version of the condition known as gestational diabetes while they were pregnant.

It was found that the longer the time a woman had breastfed her baby (or her babies), the lower the risk of diabetes later on in her life.

The study wasn't a controlled experiment created to prove whether or how breastfeeding duration might impact the odds of developing diabetes. Black women enrolled in CARDIA were also less likely to breastfeed than white women.

Still, Kumar said: "I loved this study". "If early weaning leads to a shorter breastfeeding period, then that, according to this paper, could increase one's risk of developing diabetes".

"They can still work on losing weight via lifestyle modifications and increasing physical activity as a prevention strategy", Washio said by email.

"This is major news", Feldman-Winter added.
