Twenty-one states are now experiencing high amounts of influenza activity and 36 states reported widespread cases, according to new CDC data released Friday, ABC News reported.

Rapid City Regional Hospital does not now have any restrictions on visitors.

The CDC reports that influenza activity has increased significantly in recent weeks and is now widespread in the state of California.

And the vaccine available in the USA was reported as only 10 percent effective in preventing illness from H3N2.

Flu season often begins in October, peaks between December and February, and can last as late as May, said the agency.

DHHS reported last week that more than 200 North Carolinians tested positive for the virus.

The flu is very contagious and that's why health officials are asking you to take steps now to cut down on the illness that is only going to grow.

"Influenza can be spread before symptoms occur, so hand hygiene is the most important measure to protect our patients and their family members", said registered nurse Shannon Comer, DMH infection prevention manager, in a statement. If not treated early, it can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death.

"There is antiviral medicine that can essentially stop the flu, but it only works in the first 48 hours", he said.

Complications of the flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes, the CDC says.
