The chairman of the Parole Board has said he is "very concerned" that the victims of serial rapist John Worboys were not told of his imminent release.

Worboys will be subject to strict licence conditions which will require him to report to a probation officer every week and bar him from any contact with his victims.

Amid criticisms of the decision, Professor Nick Hardwick said he recognises there is a "lack of transparency" in Parole Board processes and will be launching a public consultation.

Worboys was handed an eight-year imprisonment for public protection (IPP) sentence and has served 10 years including time spent in remand, as the Secret Barrister explains here.

He refused to answer further questions about why past cases were not brought to trial.

In a statement, the CPS said during the initial police investigation it received files relating to 83 separate complainants against Worboys, but 69 of those "did not pass the evidential test".

"The decision to release Mr Worboys, even on strict licencing conditions, can not be considered to have been made with a full and complete understanding of the impact of his many crimes without such information".

Sir Keir, who is now shadow Brexit secretary, said: "As the CPS has made clear, neither I, nor my predecessor, had any involvement in the decision-making behind this case".

"We also need to know what information and support was given to all the victims before this decision was taken". "It is vital that the public has confidence in Parole Board decisions".

A former stripper from Rotherhithe, south-east London, Warboys, 60, used alcohol and drugs to disable his victims before attacking them.

Many of his victims had been drinking in trendy West End and Chelsea bars. The drink was spiked with a mixture of drugs which left his victims incapable of defending themselves.

Politicians, women's organisations and campaigners expressed disbelief as it emerged on Thursday evening that the notorious rapist John Worboys would be released from prison.

Asked whether he thought the right decision was made by prosecutors not to pursue further allegations against the serial sex attacker, he said: "I think these decisions were nine years ago and it's very important you go to the Crown Prosecution Service and get an accurate read-out of the decisions that were made, particularly if further allegations have been made now".

Ms Clayton, 60, who was married to Worboys between 1991 and 1995, told The Sun: "I feel utter disgust".

She warned his "next step would have been murder". If he hadn't been caught and taken to court he would have murdered somebody.

"The nature of the sexual assaults and manner in which they were committed demonstrates a very calculated and determined pattern of behaviour and offending against women and it will no doubt take significant resources in ongoing monitoring and support to integrate Worboys back into society".

Meanwhile, the chief executive of Rape Crisis South London has criticised the decision to release Worboys, saying his victims would "never be totally free from his despicable actions".

It added that Sir Keir Starmer, who was director of public prosecutions at the time of Worboys' trial, did not have "any involvement in the decision making behind this case".

Police have said that his alleged victims number more than 100 after more women came forward after his conviction.
