Stokes was arrested along with England teammate Alex Hales but was released.

Avon & Somerset Police said: 'Three men have today been charged in connection with an incident of disorder on Queens Road, Bristol on 25 September a year ago.

Stokes, 26, was handed the charges on Monday and will appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court at a later date.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes might have to face a lengthy prison sentence for a brawl outside a Bristol bar in September previous year.

A statement from the CPS said it received further material in late December.

Meanwhile, Ben Stokes was first included in the Test squad for Ashes by the selectors though subject to his availability after the decision on the ongoing investigation.

Stokes missed the Ashes series after he was withdrawn by the England and Wales Cricket Board pending clearance from the police.

Express Sport understands the European Central Bank board will meet within 48 hours to discuss this latest development and what action they feel is now necessary, if any.

A statement from Avon and Somerset Police read: "Three men have today been charged in connection with an incident of disorder on Queens Road, Bristol on 25 September previous year".

It is an triable either-way offence which means it can be heard in either the magistrates' court or the crown court.

In December, Stokes was given approval to travel to New Zealand where he played six matches for Canterbury Kings and visited his extended family. He has also been given permission to take part in the Indian Premier League.

The Durham all-rounder, 26, remains suspended by the England cricket team while legal proceedings continue.

His involvement in those series' was always set to be subject to legal and disciplinary developments, however, with today's (15 January) announcement from the CPS now set to trigger a meeting of the European Central Bank board within the next 48 hours to decide on their next step.
