A surgeon who admitted burning his initials on to the livers of two unconscious transplant patients is due to be sentenced in the UK.

During sentencing, the judge said he had "betrayed the trust" of patients.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Bramhall marked his initials on the patients' livers without their consent "for no clinical reason" using a medical instrument created to seal bleeding blood vessels.

Bramhall, who is world-renowned in his profession of specializing in liver, spleen and pancreas surgery, later resigned from his job at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2014.

Bramhall worked at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for 12 years before he quit.

Opening the facts of the case against Bramhall, Tony Badenoch QC, prosecuting, said one of the surgeon's victims had been left feeling "violated" and suffering psychological harm.

In a victim impact statement, she said the moment she was shown the mark "will forever be etched on my mind".

Mr Ferguson said Bramhall was a "very respected" surgeon to whom many patients owed their lives.

Bramhall's actions came to light when one of the patients had further surgery a week later.

Bramhall later told police officers that "in hindsight" he had been naive and foolhardy during a "misjudged attempt to relieve the tension in theatre".

It would not be the first time the two Koreas have fielded joint teams. North Korea has agreed to take part in the games in South Korea.

Judge Paul Farrer QC, who said Bramhall would carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, told the defendant: "Both of the operations were long and hard". I accept that on both occasions you were exhausted and stressed and I accept that this may have affected your judgment.

He said: "This was conduct born of professional arrogance of such magnitude that it strayed into criminal behaviour".

"And no greater vulnerability than that of a patient who's under general anaesthetic and the breach of that trust and the abuse of that power were aggravating features that led us to conclude it was the right thing to do to take this case forward".

"I accept that you didn't intend or foresee anything but the most trivial of harm would be caused".

THE prosecution of surgeon Simon Bramhall was described as unique.

"I just wish I could have been treated in the same way as other patients", she wrote, according to the Mirror.

"It was Mr Bramhall who gave me my first instincts of hope", Barbara Moss explained.

In addition to the fine, Bramhall was ordered to perform 120 hours of unpaid work.

Bramhall collaborated with Army doctors to drastically improve survival rates from the conflict.

Bramhall will now face the General Medical Council to find out whether he will be permanently prevented from practicing medicine or will be allowed to resume at some point.
