-The investigation was opened on Friday and will be led by the DGCCRF, part of the Economy Ministry, the source said, reports Reuters.

It comes after a complaint by the pressure group Stop Planned Obsolescence (HOP or Halte à l'Obsolescence Programmée) after Apple admitted last month that it intentionally slowed down older models of its iPhones over time.

France has notoriously strict laws against planned Obsolescence, Reuters says that companies found guilty of "shortening the life of their products to spur demand to replace them" risk fines of up to 5 percent of their annual sales.

A French prosecutor has launched a preliminary investigation of USA tech giant Apple (AAPL.O) over alleged deception and planned obsolescence of its products following a complaint by a consumer organization, a judicial source said on Monday.

On Monday, French prosecutors announced the opening of a probe into suspected fraud by Apple in the wake of a complaint by the group-known by its French acronym HOP-which accused the USA -based company of cheating costumers unaware of the flaws intentionally built into the phones.

Apple is now facing scrutiny from prosecutors in France, who have launched a preliminary investigation into Apple and what the company has been doing to slow down older iPhones.

A French watchdog agency has launched a probe into whether Apple deliberately phased out older iPhones to force customers to upgrade to a newer model, according to worldwide media outlets.

It denied incorporating planned obsolescence. South Korea's broadcasting and telecommunications regulator also sought an explanation from Apple in December on allegations that it tried to defraud customers by deliberately slowing down devices without warning, according to the Korea Herald. There's been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we're making. "We apologize", Apple said in a message to customers on its website on December 28.

It is no secret that Apple has been slowing down older iPhones.

"We've always wanted our customers to be able to use their iPhones as long as possible".

The California-based group also faces a class-action suit in the United States.

"We have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades", the firm said at the time.
