Wojcicki said YouTube was taking a "new approach to advertising", with more manual curation, stricter criteria for videos eligible to show ads, and a greater number of ad reviewers. Subsequent revelations that YouTube was offering up cartoons featuring what the BBC called "animated violence and graphic toilet humor" added fuel to the controversy.

"We are also taking aggressive action on comments, launching new comment moderation tools and in some cases shutting down comments altogether", Wojcicki said.

Earlier this year, advertisers fled the site after ads appeared next to extremist content. It's already been using the technology to help remove violent extremist videos. Equally, we want to give creators confidence that their revenue won't be hurt by the actions of bad actors.

Wojcicki said 180,000 people would have had to work 40 weeks to assess the same amount of content.

"We've heard loud and clear from creators that we have to be more accurate when it comes to reviewing content, so we don't demonetise videos by mistake".

The YouTube CEO also stated that the company had developed a "computer-learning" technology capable of weeding out radical content on the platform, where hundreds of minutes of videos are uploaded each minute.
