Rep. John LewisJohn LewisJohn Lewis says he may not attend Mississippi Civil Rights Museum opening if Trump is there The almost 60 Dems who voted for impeachment Live coverage: Day three of the Ways and Means GOP tax bill markup MORE (D-Ga.), a key leader in the civil rights movement, announced this week that he would not attend the opening because of Trump's planned appearance, citing the president's "hurtful policies" that are an "insult to the people portrayed in the civil rights museum".

John Lewis, a congressman and civil rights icon, said he won't attend the opening yesterday, calling the President's planned appearance an "insult". "The struggles represented in this museum exemplify the truth of what really happened in Mississippi", Lewis said in a statement issued with Rep.

Lewis said the president's "disparaging comments about women, the disabled, immigrants, and National Football League players disrespect the efforts" of civil rights leaders.

The civil rights advocates said their event was meant "to pay homage and recognition to those individuals who have dedicated their lives to the civil and human rights of Mississippians minus the presence of President Donald Trump", The Hill reported.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant announced the changes late Thursday night.

The White House response was "laughable", according to the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus who pointed out the irony of criticizing two civil rights leaders for choosing not to attend a museum opening that honors them.

NAACP head Derrick Johnson, Jackson's Democratic Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and Rep. Bernie Thompson, D-Miss., plan to hold a news conference Saturday morning in Jackson ahead of the president's museum visit, The Hill reported. "I think he has to atone for how he's mistreated minorities in this country".
