Financial terms of the contract for Goodell, who has been commissioner of the most popular US sports league since 2006, were not disclosed but multiple media reports said the two sides agreed to a five-year deal worth $200 million.

Commissioner Roger Goodell was given a contract extension by the owners Wednesday afternoon.

The memo explains that a "binding contract extension has been signed by the Commissioner and by Arthur Blank, on behalf of the League entities".

"We are pleased to report that there is a almost unanimous consensus among the ownership in favor of signing the contract extension now", the NFL's compensation committee said in a letter obtained by FOX Business.

Settle in, football fans, because Roger Goodell isn't going anywhere. It was particularly gratifying to hear so many owners commit to being more engaged in League affairs and to express the desire to work more closely with the Commissioner and League staff on matters critical to the League.

Goodell's salary was about $32 million in 2015, the past year for which compensation for top league officials was made available in a tax filing. Sources had told ESPN in October that the debate over NFL player protests during the national anthem was one reason for the delay in completing the extension. The agreement is worth as much as $200 million, though much of the pay is linked to financial targets and other incentives, according to the New York Times.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opposed the deal publicly in the wake of a controversial six-game suspension levied against Cowboys' running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Jones had been removed as a non-voting seventh member of the compensation committee after his threat of a lawsuit.
