Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not meet United States Vice President Mike Pence later this month after U.S. President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"It will be ordinary Israelis and Palestinians who will have to live with the violence", Mladenov emphasized in calling upon political, religious, and community leaders to avoid using any rhetoric that could promote further escalation.

The United States has become the first country in the world to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel following Trumps' decision.

The shift in longstanding US policy sparked demonstrations on Thursday in the occupied Palestinian territories, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq and in some other Muslim countries.

Trump's backing of Israel's claim over the holy city delivered a major blow to the Palestinians, who claim Arab-majority East Jerusalem as the capital of their desired state.

The Coptic Church "excused itself from hosting Mike Pence", citing Trump's decision which came at "at an unsuitable time" and was made "without consideration for the feelings of millions of people", the MENA news agency reported.

Trump said this marks the start of a "new approach" to solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Meanwhile, protesters, the majority of them young boys and men, erected a barricade blocking the road and threw stones in the direction of an army base north of Bethlehem.

However, Palestinian protests on Saturday were less intense than on the previous two days.

In Gaza, mourners vented their anger at the funerals of two people killed during clashes at the border fence on Friday and the two Hamas militants killed early on Saturday.

Hamas, which controls Gaza, confirmed the two men killed in the pre-dawn strikes belonged to the group, which has urged Palestinians to keep up the confrontation with Israeli forces.

The Turkish presidential source said Erdogan and Macron agreed during a phone call that Trump's move was worrying for the region and that Turkey and France would make a joint effort to try to reverse the USA decision.
